The University of Minnesota School of Public Health students and the
Jan Seva Community Health Program employees have been introducing the 4 and 5 year old
Jan Seva students to Galli Galli Sim Sim (the Indian version of "Sesame
Street") episodes about gender roles and conflict resolution. The cartoon
episodes help the children process and verbalize their experiences while
building resilience. While watching, the children point out the colors of the
characters and clothing that looks like their own. Children have learned that
it is okay to disagree with friends and have shared their perceptions of gender
roles. We look forward to using more Galli Galli Sim Sim episodes to foster
learning and conversations.
